Er bietet damit Hilfe bei der Lösung selbst entlegener Probleme, die in anderen Werken kaum berücksichtigt werden. Begründet wurde der damals einbändige Kommentar im Mai 1916 in Leipzig von Ludwig Ebermayer, Adolf Lobe und Werner Rosenberg.
